Who are the Delaware Valley Singles?
|
The DVS is a social club consisting of adults over the age of 35. While members from beyond this region take part, most participants live in Hunterdon, Warren and Somerset counties of Western New Jersey and neighboring Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The Delaware River Valley is the geographical feature most common to the members, hence the name Delaware Valley Singles, Del Val Singles or simply DVS. Membership is free. Most events require little or no expense other than that needed to get to them. Car pooling is common. Participation is limited to "Singles"only. A single person is defined as one who has never married, is widowed, divorced or "legally" separated. The DVS was created by Friends of Sally Swenson. Del-Val-Singles has two primary purposes: First: To provide single adults with opportunities to meet other single adults who share similar interests. The intention is to provide activities that are fun, interesting, socially comfortable and appropriate to the needs of those who choose to participate. The events are designed to allow individuals to maintain whatever degree of autonomy and privacy they wish. Second: To carry on the tradition started by one particularly caring woman: Sally Swenson. Sally was many things to many people: she was an artist, an educator, a realtor, a friend and a mother. However, what stood out and which will be always remembered about her was her concern for others and her generosity. Sally was about bringing people together. She was committed to creating a space that was safe and where people could show up authentically; a space that was supportive, nurtured individuals and encouraged friendships.
How does it work? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

You find out what events are scheduled and either show up or don't; it's your choice. There are no mailing lists; there is no database. This rule is deliberate and will be strictly enforced. No one will be permitted to accumulate information about Del Val Singles participants, covertly or otherwise. Anyone attempting to do so will be denied access to future events. If you meet someone whose company you enjoy, and you want to provide them with your name phone number, etc, that's your choice. Do what's appropriate and comfortable for you. While this introduces logistical problems for everyone, the benefits make it worthwhile: it helps safeguard the members from commercial or personal exploitation by those with questionable motives or hidden agendas. It helps to insure that the DVS will continue to work to the benefit of all who choose to participate, not just a select few. What do people do? The primary activities are, Walking, Dancing, Hiking and Bicycling. Other activities consist of Boating, Tubing, White Water Rafting, Running, Astronomy, Museum Tours, Picnics. We even have a group of men and women motorcyclists who will take day trips or extended Cross Country rides starting this Spring. The list of activities is as long and as varied as there are people. Each activity has a Coordinator. Typically, that's someone who loves to, lets say Dance, who volunteers to be coordinator for a few events in which dancing is the principal activity. That Coordinator commitment is only for as long as the individual wishes. They can resign from the activity at any time. One coordinator loves Hiking in the hills overlooking the Hudson River, knows the trails and the best spots for viewing The Hudson River Valley. One Coordinator loves Sailing and races Hobey Cats. He is attempting to organizes a sailing party at his boating club. If successful, members who wish to sail can get a ride on a Hobey Cat. In essence, it's not just about what others love to do. It's about what YOU love to do and your desire to share the experience. You have the enjoyment of creating new playmates in an activity you have passion for. Others get to share in your enthusiasm and discover novel, interesting ways of having fun that might not have occurred to them. Are you obliged to be a coordinator? No! However, experience has shown that you get out of life only what you put in. Coordinators put in a fair amount of effort but they also seem to get a lot of enjoyment out of it too.

Soon, you'll be able to log on to this website, poke around and find out what's happening where and when. In the meantime you can get event information via e-mail. If you're concerned about privacy or don't have an existing e-mail provider, you might want to acquire a free, discrete e-mail service, one that insures autonomy. Then simply send an E-mail request to Del Val Singles at the address shown below. Ask that Event Notices be sent to you via e-mail. Eventually, a phone line will be connected to a dedicated answering machine. This will be used to support those who cannot access a computer but who still wish to participate. It will announce current and future activities as well as any last minute changes. ie: weather related cancellations of outdoor events, change of meeting place, etc. | EVENT NOTES: If details can be worked out, beginning in March, the DVS will be meeting on alternate Tuesday evenings for Swing Dance Lessons by a professional instructor. Lessons will be free. Stay tuned. Country Line Dancing with lessons commences on Thursday, February 4th. The Motorcycle Coordinator has completed the details for this year's first scheduled group tour to Cornwall Landing, New York via the Military Academy at West Point. Send an e-mail for details.
